AAUA VC Unveils Secret of Varsity’s Enviable Academic Track Record

The Vice-Chancellor of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Prof. Femi Mimiko, has listed commitment to training and retraining of staff, commitment to enhancement of the integrity of academic programmes and stable academic calendar as the secret behind the sustainable improvement in the academic track record of the school, especially the feats achieved by his administration in the past two years.

The Vice Chancellor made these disclosures in a chat with the Press crew of the Information, Protocol and Public Relations Unit of the Institution in his office.

Prof. Mimiko said, “What we are doing to ensure that we remain on track of our academic excellence in the past two years is to expose our lecturers to the right type of training. We make them to realize that they cannot afford to rest on their oars.

“We push them to attend international conferences and we challenge them to undertake research. We make funds available to support them if they have viable research proposals. If they have academic papers to present at any international conference, we fund them liberally to be able to attend.”

According to the Vice Chancellor, 25 of the University’s young academics are pursuing higher degrees (Ph.D. and Master) abroad.

Prof. Mimiko said three of them pursuing the degree of Master topped their class in two British universities and one in South Africa.

The VC said, “This will go on to show that the quality of progammes offering here is high and comparable to what we have around the world. For me, it is a big thing to celebrate!

“I am very happy that we are getting some good results from the quality of our academic programmes; our students and alumni are doing the University proud within and outside the country. Also, our graduate fellows we sent abroad are doing well.”

It will be recalled that two alumni of the University, Bukola Akintade and Funke Fakutiju, came first nationally in the 2009 and 2010 Chartered Institute of Bankers on Nigeria (CIBN) Examinations respectively.

AAUA was also voted Best State University in Nigeria in 2005.

Prof. Mimiko, who also indicated that the University e-library is well equipped, said the rule governing zero tolerance for sale of handouts is still in force and will be strictly enforced.

He said, “We believe that selling handouts to students is destructive of scholarship and there is no room for that.”

The VC, revealed that the Institution was on the verge of developing what he called, “Distinctive Adekunle Ajasin University Model of Passing Instructions to Students”, which will help the University to assess, “who is teaching well and who is not.”

The Vice Chancellor thanked staff and students for the modest accomplishments of the University by allowing peace to reign on campus and thus making a predictable academic calendar possible.
